Task 2d Inquiry

Looking at Reflection in relation to my professional practice was very interesting. I noticed quite a few reoccurring themes. This has made me look in detail about what drives me and what my weaknesses are in my profession. At the moment I feel as thought I am just over half way through my professional dancing career, I know that if I had reflected on this as little as a year ago my answers and thoughts would be very different. I have come to realise that your professional life can be strongly driven by your personal life and vice versa. When I first left college I was full of drive determined to get where I wanted, always cared what people thought of me, wouldnt have really consider going away from home on a long contract and thought if you worked hard enough you would get what you wanted. Now however after being in the industry for 3/4 years my thoughts are very different. I am still driven and determined but in a different way. I always thought it was about getting the best job, the one that had a name for itself that most people would have heard of, however now I know it isn't about that. What I thought I would love doing when I first graduated is not actually what I love the most. I used to want to be in music videos and dance on TV. However now I love performing on stage so much more. For me I get a lot more job satisfaction out of that than anything else. I have realised that you have to be good at every part of the industry not necessarily in talent but networking, socialising, working hard, knowing when to stick up for yourself and when to let things go and trying to like everyone that you work with is sometimes impossible but learning how to work together is enough. Where I thought I wouldnt travel with work I now love it and have definitely caught the travel bug. Therefore when I started answering the questions below it surprised me what I first thought of and how much I have changed after only 3 years. Here are my thoughts to the questions below:

  • What in your daily practice gets you really enthusiastic to find out more about?

At the moment my daily practice keeps changing regularly. I am currently in rehearsals for a new show. From these rehearsals it has really made me think about different teaching techniques and how to adapt to different styles quickly. I love learning a new style and the different ways you are challenged to learn and the way different people teach. For the last week I have been rehearsing on a one-to-one basis as I am the newest member to the show and the rest of the cast know the choreography already it is just me for now. From this I have realised how hard I find it to learn a show by yourself. At first I thought it would be great as I would have so much attention and would be able to really focus however a lot of the choreography is partner work and interacting with the rest of the cast. Without the atmosphere and rapport you have with your other cast members it is so hard to learn and perform. Even more so with partner work as you can learn the choreography but that means nothing when you cant actually dance it as you should be being lifted. Therefore I am enthusiastic about team work creating and atmosphere together and entertaining people with that energy and power. I also enthusiastic about how much impact a good partnership can make on stage and how you can get so use to someones movements and knowing what they are about to do next.

  •  Who do admire who also works with what makes enthusiastic?

I admire one of my fellow cast members and now company manger. He is always enthusiastic and has so much energy. He sees the positive in a situation and is grateful for every moment he gets to perform on stage and work in the industry. I have found that a lot of performers can become complacent and lose sight of why they are doing a job. He works so well in a team and can bring people together, as he understands what it is like to be a cast member and sees both sides to a given situation. His enthusiasm and energy is infectious and a great motivated.

  • What gets you angry or makes you sad?

In my working life at the moment what makes me sad is missing people and the constant pressure of making it. Being away from home and having a job where what you're doing constantly changes and isnt stable, is a very hard life to lead. Being in the industry that we are in, we sacrifice and miss out on important things that mean a lot to us. For example telling a friend you wont be able to go to their wedding, missing birthdays, or important milestones in the lives of the people you love the most. One of the hardest relationship to keep is the one with your boyfriend/partner. Constantly having to arrange your schedule around each other, being away from each other and compromising starts to take its toll. This in particular gets harder as you get older and you naturally want a more stable life, especially when other people your age that you are surrounded by are starting to settle down. As a performer, particularly a dancer you have a limited time span to fulfil what you want to achieve, as your body can only withstand the industry for short amount time, compared to a lot of other careers. For women in particular it is a very hard juggling act. If you want children and a successful career it is so difficult to get a good balance. The best way to get through this constant dilemma is knowing you are not the only person that has this problem and finding a balance of what is important to you.

  • Who do you admire who shares your feelings or has found a way to work around the sadness or anger?

A person I have always admired and find very inspiration is Carlos Acosta. I first read his biography No Way Home as research for a project at dance college. Straight away I fell in love with his book and found his story so inspirational. It really changed how I thought about the passion and love you can have for something for example dancing and what a difference it can make to have that much passion for something in your life. Even the title of his book No Way Home already dictates how he feels. Throughout his life he has faced many struggles to get where he is today particularly within his home life. At the start of his career he really struggled being away from his family and belonging somewhere as he had to travel for his dancing. I found the book comforting and inspiring. Although my background and life is completely different to his, it shows that people can get through so much, and that even the people that are top and the best is their profession struggle with the same issues.

  • What do you love about what you do?
  • Who do admire who also seems to love this or an example of what you love?

I love the feeling you have on stage when performing, I love how you can entertain people and hopefully get them to enjoy themselves for that moment when they are watching a show and get lost in it. Knowing that you are making someone feel something hopefully usually uplifted or happy depending what show you are doing but will have an effect on the audience in a positive way in which they gained something from watching you perform. Expressing yourself in a different form and someone else understanding how you feel. I love the whole process, of becoming a different character and performer. From the point where you are getting ready, putting on your make-up, and styling your hair, to learning a new style and woking with different people.

An example of what I love is what I am currently doing. I have recently been learning a show set from the 1950s/60s. Since I have started I have looked into what happened in that era, the social norms, how men and women would have behaved, how they were treated and how they used to dress. After just two weeks in of learning the show I already feel as though I have a better understanding of the style. The whole process of this is exactly what I love the most. Working with such talented people and seeing how they have taken to the style, you can learn and develop your ability so much more.

  • What do you feel you don't understand?
  • Who do you admire who does seem to understand it or who has found a way of making not understanding it interesting or beautiful, or has asked the same question as you?

The main thing I will never understand in this industry is how it can be so fickle. There have been so many people I know that I thought would definitely work once they left college, but haven't worked at all. One minute you could be in constant work and the next you could not get any work for months, making it so much harder to make a living out of it. A lot of the time  you could get to the end of an audition but then not be chosen, which obviously happens a lot to people. However the fact that you may not get any feedback to why you were unsuccessful and having to accept the reality that you will never know why they picked the other person over you. I think a big part of getting on in the industry is accepting the fact that you wont know why and use the experience in a positive way.

Another area which I do not understand is there is a constant question what are you doing next. As a performer you are always thinking about what is next and working towards getting another contract whilst your still doing one so that there isnt a big gap where you are not working. I remember one of the best things a teacher said to me was, Appreciate the job youre doing and remember to enjoy that moment, rather than thinking about what job is next, otherwise you wont realise your success and enjoy what you worked so hard for. At the time I remember not understanding why you wouldnt do this but now I can see it is completely true. I have found that it isnt just people in the industry that do this but also people out side of the industry. The first question people ask is what are you doing at the moment and the what are you doing next. Sometimes you dont know and you have to audition again. But it is almost seen as unacceptable.  that a lot of the time we dont just appreciate our job at that time and are always thinking what is next!.

  • How do you decide the appropriate ethical response in a given situation?
  • To what extend are disciplinary responses different to that you might expect more generally in society? For example, what level of physical contact would you deem appropriate (and not) from another professional that you would find unacceptable more generally?
  • Why?

I find this area of appropriate ethical response one of the hardest but also the best part about working with people in this industry. As most of my experience has been in dance contracts touring around different countries, I am going to focus on that area. In a normal workplace you usually just work with your colleagues, sometimes you might go for something to eat or drink or socialise after work together. However on a usual dance contract touring you would have to travel, work, eat, and usually have to share a room with someone, never really having a moment to yourself. You are constantly in each others company making it harder to keep your professional boundaries up all the time, eventually your personal life will come into the equation, therefore changing your relationship with your fellow work colleagues. When you are away from home and you are constantly around the same group of people, you automatically become a lot closer in a shorter amount of time than you normally would. Some people call it living in a bubble. Therefore when it comes to working in a show together most people in the cast know each others personal life. This can make your job easier and the connection you have with people makes a stronger performance on stage or it could make it harder as you all know each others business and it can sometimes get messy.

Another area which I have always found funny is the closeness and how open you have to be in front of people. As a dancer you cannot be shy about being half naked and getting changed in front of people. When there are quick changes during a show you do not have time to be self conscious and have to let your inhibitions go. In an office environment you would not work together half naked and help each other get change, however this is the norm in the dance world. You automatically have to feel more comfortable round each other in order to do this.

Although at times this area of ethical boundaries can be blurred between the lines and can make your work life harder, it can also be great. You can make friends for life and have a much closer connection with people generally. I have met so many amazing people and shared moments with them that I will never forget. They are the ones that share that moment where you are living your dream. If you are travelling around the world together, you see things that most people dream about seeing. Although you arent with your loved ones who you would normally share those moments with, the closeness that you have from the working environment that a performer works in, makes it easier and a lot more meaningful with those you are with.

Task 2b Reflective Writing Journal Writing Experience

I really enjoyed looking at different ways to write my journal. I found that some ways more usual than others. Here are two examples of my journal:

List Diagram - This is the easiest and most comfortable way for me to write. Although I found that I didn't have much detail about the day but it was good for a quick overview.

Day 1:

Woke up and got ready for work: Need to pack bag the night before, wasted time looking for things for my day.
Travelled to work: Easy journey to work, no train delays.
Met the person that was taking the rehearsals for the next few days: Felt very nervous as it was the first day of rehearsals and it was just me rehearsing with the Dance Captain.
Started learning a new number in the show: Really like the style, however was difficult to learn without my partner.
Learnt two another numbers in the show: These two numbers were a lot easier as there wasnt any partner so I didn't have to rely on someone else.
Had Lunch: Got to know the Dance Captain more.
Learnt two more numbers in the show: These were the hardest to learn as they had partner work in it, and I will not have my partner to work with until next week, this worries me.
Short break: We took a short break.
Learnt the last two numbers in Act One: These two were easier as I didn't have a partner however, the girls dance was harder without having other people around you dancing, as there is a lot of cannons and freestyle. This is a lot easier to do when you have other people dancing with you.
Recapped everything that I learnt that day: I remembered more than I thought I would, however I still dont feel completely comfortable with the choreography as I haven't got my partner to work with.
Travelled Home: Easy journey, went through in my head what I learnt that day, happy that I had finished Act One.
Watched Act Two for the show: Looking forward to learning Act Two tomorrow. Went over the choreography that I had learnt that day.
Went for a meal with friends: Met up with my friends from home that I hadnt seen for a while.
Got ready for bed: Packed my bag ready for the next day, to save stress in the morning.

How I felt about the day

It was great to start learning a new show, and I think I will really enjoy it, however I am still feeling apprehensive about it all as I have realised I do not enjoy learning a show on my own without having the rest of the cast with me, especially without my partner as you cant do the choreography properly without them. It has also made me realise even more that Im the new one in a cast that have already worked together and know the show very well. This is a new experience for me in my career.

____________________________________________________________

Chart Diagram - I found this format very productive. It was great to see visually how my day had been broken down in time and what I spent the most time on. I thought this was a good way to reflect on what I spend my time doing and how I could improve my schedule. I constantly feel like I do not have enough time in the day to do everything I want to do. I used this method for a few weeks as well as another format of writing a diary to see where I spend my time and how I could improve as each day is different this gave me a better view of a usual schedule rather than using it for one day.

Breakdown of Day

Getting ready for Work: 2 hours

Travelling to and from work: 3 hours

Rehearsing: 6 hours - broken down: Recapping 1 hour, learning new material: 3 hours Practice/ cleaning all new material: 2 hours

          Uni Work/other errands: 4 hours

          Social: 2 hours

          Rest: 6 hours

There were two other ways that I found useful. I found the what if? way interesting. I happened to use this format on a day when I had an audition. I had been unsuccessful at the audition but found this task useful. At the end of the day I thought about what it would have been like if I had got the job. It made me realise that I didn't actually want the job and that I was mainly going just because there was an audition and there hadn't been many at the time. From doing this it made me think about what I actually wanted, and what I needed to do in order to get there. This was very productive and I started looking into a different way to network and get into the area I wanted to work in.

I also found the format Another View useful. Trying to view your day from a different perspective was really interesting. On the day that I used this format, was the first day of blocking  with everyone from the cast, dancers and singers. Our dance captain came across stressed, unorganised and kept changing what she wanted. Overall the day was difficult and stressful. I decided to look at the day from the perspective of my dance captain. After doing this it made me realise that however difficult and stressful the day was for me, it must have been even harder for her. It made me more understanding and patient. For the rest for the blocking rehearsals I found I was a lot more understanding and was more patient with the process and tried to get other cast members to be more understanding.

Looking at the different ways to reflect. It made me realise that most of the formats have a different purpose and helps you to look at things differently, for example if you wanted to breakdown what you spend your time doing and how you could improve it, I would use the chart format, however this wouldn't be as useful if you wanted to look more into how you felt about the day and the emotions that you had gone through.

Finding the Reading List

Hi everyone,

Just a little blog to help anyone who had trouble finding the reading list.

After you have logged into myUniHub, click on the My Study tab.

In the centre of the page there is a section called 'My Library', select 'Reading Lists'.

This will open a new window titled 'Online Reading Lists'.

Enter the module code in the search field and click the magnifying glass. This will return all of the reading material for the module, select the one you require.

I hope this helps

Task 2a: Reflective Practice

When I first read about this task I was very skeptical as I really do not enjoy writing a journal, from previous work I have done before I had not enjoyed it and found it quite tedious. However as I started writing this journal and reflecting I have found it very useful and beneficial to look back at what had happened in the day and what I could take away from it. At first I really struggled to find the time to keep the journal up to date, but once I found a routine with it I got stuck into it. I found the best way to do this was to write in my journal before I went to bed. I actually ended up finding the journal quite relaxing and a good way to get all my thoughts out of my head before I went to sleep. I found I actually slept better!

As I am auditioning still and currently in rehearsals, I have been finding everything very overwhelming and difficult to focus on one thing without my thoughts jumping to something else. From the job I am working on at the moment, to looking for my next job, to keeping up to date with the BAPP work, having a personal life and working at my part-time job until I go away, I have tried to gain as much as I could from this task. I have always been a big list maker, to the point where my family and friends make a joke out of it. I started writing my journal in this way as it was what I knew best and felt most comfortable with. I started by writing the main events of my day, how it made me feel, what I learnt, if anything and what I wanted to change or improve on the next day.

After a few days I found that using a list format may not have be the best way to write my thoughts out. After reading Reader 2 it opened my eyes to using other ways. In my next blog I will show the different ways I found most useful for myself…….

http://spiritualboosters.com/2013/07/23/365-journal-writing-ideas/

Task 1d: 2d Images

I enjoyed this Task as I love Photos and photography. I love the idea that you can capture a moment which can be easily missed. It is a great way to remember where you have been, what you have done and the progression of a person, and object or a place. I have chosen to use Instagram as I know the app well and I believe it is one of the easier and better quality apps for photos, plus most of my contacts and people I know use Instagram rather than Flickr therefore it would be better for networking.

I have decided to set up a new Instagram account, please have a look at the link below of some photos of a few contracts I have done:

 http://instagram.com/francesca_bapp

A Photo can tell us so many things, ‘a photo is worth a thousand words’ is a perfect saying to describe how much one photo can tell you about something, whether it be how someone is feeling or the situation. Images and photos play a large part in advertising and can be very effective. It proves that imagery can have a massive effect on the way people behave, and what they like. For example a restaurant would take images of the food they produce to advertise what they cook. Fitness companies usually use athletic models in order to show off the clothing line or products.

In our industry we use photos to advertise ourselves. Most performers have a portfolio in order to show the employer our face and body shape. It is a big part of the selection process and usually that is the first thing that the employer will see and automatically gets an impression from.

It is incredibly important in todays social media as it is one of the best ways to advertise yourself, a company or a product. To constantly be up to date and make sure you use the right photographer and have the right angle etc can make all the difference.

The other side to this is now people can take photos whenever they want for example, during a performance someone in the audience can take a photo without your permission. Although there are signs and ushers to prevent this from happening, it still happens a lot of the time. It is harder to control copyright. People are able to put up images of you without you knowing. As the World Wide Web is so big it would be impossible to track the photos or footage that are taken of you and being used in a way that you didn’t want.

Task 1b: Professional Communication Technologies

Before I had read Reader 1 I had never heard of the term Web 2.0. After reading the document I realised how little I had thought about the development of Web 2.0, and the impact it is making on the world.

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is a web-based community that enables you interact and share between other web users, unlike Web 1.0 where the communication is one way, and the user obtains information the the creator has provided. There is usually no interaction between the two. Web 2.0 however has created a path for people to share and interact with one another. Examples of Web 2.0 are Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Google+, YouTube, etc. From looking into this it has made me realise how dependant we are on Web 2.0. Most of us would have to admit that we go onto these sites for example Facebook, when we first wake up, before we go to bed, whenever we have a spare moment. Most of us have gotten into the habit of constantly updating people about our day or reading about what has happened in someone else's day. Not only has it taken over our social lives it is also taking over our work lives. It is becoming a necessity to know the communication technologies that exist now.

How Web 2.0 Helps

In one of the sections in the reader it talks about a ‘collective intelligence’ this I think has had the biggest impact on peoples lives. Feenberg & Bakardjieva, 2004 stated Web 2.0 offers a ‘social space for people, strangers and almost strangers with diverse backgrounds to come together as equals, as generators of ideas, to deliberate and act collectively’. When I read this statement it summed up the main positive influence of Web 2.0. The incredible amount of knowledge and interaction we can now gain has changed so much. Another aspect which I thought was key to Web 2.0 was by Ullrich, they stated the importance of participation and how it has developed. By making it a lot easier to use the social media sites, software etc. more and more people can use Web 2.0, thereby increasing the information available. For example, even the older generation who grew up in a time when computer technology did not exist, are now able to use the social medium without significant training.

After reading the Reader I also started to think about how Web 2.0 technologies help me personally in my work life and personal life. In the performing industry there has been a massive increase over the years of online performing profiles and being able to apply for castings and auditions through this format. Websites such as, ‘Talent cast’, ‘DancersPro’, ‘Spotlight’, ‘Star Now’, and the Facebook group ‘The Hustle’ has enabled performers to gain more information about auditions, jobs and agencies so much quicker than you could ever do before. Sites such as YouTube has enabled dance companies, individuals and artists to show off their work in a visual format which is an amazing tool for performers particularly as what we do is visual. Rather than just uploading photos we are now able to upload videos a lot easier than we use to before.

Away from my work life I love social media. The main reason is that I am able to see what my family and friends are up to when I am unable to see or speak to them regularly. When I have been away in the past or my family and friends have, we have been able to communicate and show people what we are doing right down to where we are and who we are with.

There is a Negative Side

Another area in Reader 1 that had got me thinking was the term ‘Netiqutte’. I looked up the definition of Netiquette is: ‘ the rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, particularly over the internet.’ Over the last few years it has become more and more apparent that not everyone behaves how they should do whilst using the internet. For example cyber bullying and trolls have increased to the point where there is now a new criminal law to try to stop this from happening. Many people in the public eye have had an experience of this in some form. Unfortunately some individuals have seen the internet as a way to express how they feel and what they think in a negative way. Comments that people would rarely ever say to someone’s face or put in writing as a letter appears to have become easier to do on the web. As they are at home behind the computer screen and can just do it with a click of a button. I think people gain a false sense of security and forget what they are actually writing could insult, scare or effect people in a negative way.

Another interesting point to look into was from Kuehn 2010, they talk about the boundaries of someone’s personal and professional life. When using social media such as Facebook it can sometimes be difficult to separate the two without causing problems. For example if your occupation is in a position of trust such as a teacher, they would not want their pupils and their pupils parents seeing what their teacher is doing at the weekend, as that may be seen as inappropriate and unprofessional. Much like as a performer you would have professional photos done for modelling or some dance contracts which may be revealing, however you wouldn't necessarily want the people you work with in your part-time job to see them or if you taught children at an after-school club.

Another area that I have found recently is that people spend a lot of time looking at what others do and making themselves look better just for their online life. For example, on a recent work trip myself and a few of me fellow cast members took a short trip around Johannesburg. We saw some amazing sites during this trip, half way through the day I over heard one of the girls say ‘Lets just get a photo so we can put it on Facebook, to show everyone we were here, instead of actually going in’ She was more interested in the idea of everyone knowing she was at an amazing place rather than actually taking an interest in what was around her and appreciating that moment. This made me feel so sad as she could not appreciate what a brilliant opportunity it was to be there and learn more about different culture and was more interested in how it would look on Facebook.

Conclusion:

Overall Reading Reader 1 has made me really think about what Web 2.0 is, how it enhances us and how it can be used against us. It is important to look at the difference between using it for work and for every day life. For us as performers I think it is an great tool that has enhanced our industry completely. However it is important not to lose sight of real life.

Out of Touch

Hi everyone, Sorry about my inactivity in the blogging world. I have recently been in China and have been unable to connect to Google, as everything associated with Google has been blocked in China. This has caused a problem with uploading onto my blog and looking at everyone else's.

Currently in China, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google and other websites have been blocked. Since looking at Web 2.0 and from being in China it has made me realise how hard it is to connect with people and research certain areas without these websites and applications. It has made me appreciate the difference it makes and how much easier it is with these tools.

Hopefully over the next week or so I will be able to catch up with everyones blogs and post some up myself.....

Campus Session: Monday 6th October

On Monday 6th October I arrived to the Hendon campus. I was slightly nervous about the day ahead as I wasn’t sure what to expect from the session, and found myself very overwhelmed by how big the University was. It gave me a realisation that I was actually doing an academic course and had started this new challenge.

Before we started the session we all introduced ourselves and explained a bit about what we were doing at the moment and why we wanted to do the course. It was great to meet everyone that came to the session and to hear about the different situations and backgrounds that people are coming from.

The main focus of the session was  based around Web 2.0 looking at the question:

How do the Principles and practice of web-based communication support or challenge professional (arts-related) Practice?

We were asked to split up into groups and discuss this question in detail looking at the supporting arguments and the challenging arguments of how web-based communications can enhance or hinder our professional practice. Finding evidence to support our findings and then produce a power point presentation to the rest of the group.

At first our group was slightly confused. We weren’t sure where to start at first but once we starting discussing the question and started to think about how it related to us and our profession we came up with a lot of supporting and challenging arguments. We started mind-mapping our ideas and came up with three main questions. Here are some of our main thoughts:

Supporting Arguments:

  • Great for Advertising/ Marketing ourselves
  • Inspiration
  • Ideas and suggestions
  • Knowledge: Current industry news and Auditions
  • Networking

Challenging Arguments:

  • Privacy can be compromised
  • Cannot control what information, photos of you etc. that is uploaded
  • Copyright
  • Become lazy and too reliant
  • Getting a bias view rather than making your own opinion for example asking people about a certain company
  • Reliability
  • Balance of personal life and professional life is hard with social media.

Our Main Questions:
  1. How do we control what other people put about us?
  2. Are we too reliant on the internet?
  3. Would we be able to market ourselves/ our business as effectively without web facilities
Our mind maps

As we were short for time we could only focus on one of the questions we had. We chose.. Are we too reliant on the Internet?

We began to create our power point presentation and arranged how we would present this to the rest of the group. Overall we found that for every positive argument we had there was also a negative. We came to conclusion that we would be lost without web-based communications as it has enhanced our industry so much, however you need a balance and not become too reliant on asking for help or looking up something rather than actually going out and finding out for yourself. Use the reality that we are living rather than just using the internet all the time.

Overall I found the Campus really useful. I enjoyed meeting everyone in person and gained a lot from talking through ideas and opinions with people and working together on something. I think you can gain so much with face-to-face interaction. I now feel more confident with the course and I feel I have a better understanding of what the course entails.

Task 1a - Professional Profile

Task 1a - CV Profile

A CV is a very important part in every person’s application for a job. It is the first point at which the employer gets a chance to read about you, what you have achieved and what you are looking to do. It is the starting point at which you are judged and have the potential to stand out from the rest.

As a performer you usually have two types of CV. Your professional CV and what I call your ‘everyday job’ CV. These two types are very different for example if you are auditioning for a dance company, you would not need to include that you have great customer service and you met all your sales targets. Also vice versa if you are applying for office work it isn’t going to help putting on your CV that you have toured China for three months and one of your skills is Irish dancing. The information given in both are completely unrelated to the job you are applying for.

Here is my current profile:

 Francesca Marie Smith

When I first read this task I analysed my own CVs and researched online for tips given to improve your CV. There were several points that stood out the most to me upon reading these tips:

1. The basics: All your details and information are up to date and accurate.
2. Clear Presentation: Correct spelling and format clear and easy to read.
3. Keep CV short, not too many pages.

               And mainly………

4. Tailor your CV to each job/role you are applying for

Recently I have found how important it is to alter your CV to match different jobs. Focusing your the CV to the job you are applying for will immediately make the it more personal and you will stand out more. From the following points above I had found that I had not updated certain details on my professional CV i.e. my playing age, my skills and a job that I had recently done. I had been more concerned about which headshot to use and what to wear rather than concentrating on updating my CV and online profiles. I also realised that the layout was confusing and unclear. Below I have re-arranged my Profile slightly.

My CV now has a clearer layout and has been updated with the accurate information. Another aspect of a CV that I have noticed since graduating is the increase in popularity of a video CV i.e. a show reel or demo. In the past it was not important to have a show reel as it was always better to see the person in real life rather than casting off of a video. However now that technology has improved so much I have found employers want to see show reels on your professional profiles as well as a written one before looking at you as a potential dancer. Software such as iMovie, Garageband and Youtube, has enabled a person who has average computer skills to create and upload their work, whereas before you would of had to paid a skilled IT professional to help you put together your work. New devices such as camera phones and tablets has made creating a show reel a lot easier with a greater quality end product. I am currently in the process of editing my own show reel.

As the industry and technology is constantly moving forward, it is essential to keep up to date and research media and styles to anticipate what the next trend will be.
